Guide Rod Slipped Back With Barrel During Assembly
Back to Kel-Tec stuff
When putting the slide/barrel assembly back onto the frame of the P-11
(or I guess this could happen on a P-32 also but I have never heard of that yet)
the recoil rod can slip off the cup in the frame that it is supposed to rest in.
Also this is more prone to happen with the plastic recoil spring guide rod than
the metal one (more on plastic vs. metal here)
If this happens it will lock the barrel, slide and guide rod back and not allow
it to return forward. If the guide rod slides back with the barrel as in this pic
then this has happened.

|
The first pic is how the recoil guide rod, recoil springs, barrel and slide fit together.
The second pic shows how the guide rod is supposed to rest in the cup in the
frame. The third pic shows the guide rod up over that cup which is where it
is when this happens.

|
Here you can see that if you look down the mag well you can see the rod resting
on the cup in the barrel after slipping over the cup in the frame (if this were to
actually happen you would see the recoil springs also, mine were not in for the pic).

To get the rod back forward you need to make sure the barrel is fully locked up
into the slide. To do this you will need to move the slide slightly forward and hold
the gun upside down so that gravity helps keep the barrel up into the slide. You
can see in the First pic that when the slide is pulled all the way back the barrel
is not fully locked into the slide. In the second pic you can see the slide is slightly
forward (look at the slide lock vs. slide lock notch in the slide relation) and the
barrel is fully seated into the slide.
|
|
Now with the side in the correct position and the barrel fully seated into the slide,
grip the slide as shown in the first pic. This is so that you are keeping the slide
still and not let it move in relation to the frame, and this also keeps the gun
upside down and the barrel locked to the slide. Put a flat blade screwdriver in
through the mag well and push it between the head of the guide rod and the
cup in the barrel. Using the screwdriver push the rod forward and grip the tip
of the rod with pliers. Leave the screwdriver in the mag well. It will be in front
of the cup in the barrel and thus keep the barrel and slide back.
|
|
Now pull the guide rod out and up (actually down for the gun, but it is upside
down) until it is past the cup in the frame (like in the first pic). Then pull the
rod down (again actually up for the gun) and that will force the head of the
rod into the cup in the frame.
|
|
Now you can pull back on the slide a little and remove the screw driver.
Then get the barrel forward and put in the assembly pin.
